Bias tape

Note: If you sew the vest out of plaid fabric, pin paper parts onto fabric, matching the plaids at side seams.

Instructions:

1. Line up Pocket lining with Pocket face-to-face, matching top edges. Stitch together. Turn out the Pocket, lining up shell and lining wrong sides together, matching raw edges at sides and bottom of Pocket. Double-topstitch (at the edge and 0.5 cm (3/16") apart) at the Pocket’s top edge. Make a second, parallel, double-topstitching 4 cm (1-5/8") below the first one.

2. Turn under raw edges of Pocket; press. Mark Pocket placement at Front. Apply and topstitch Pocket to Front with a double-topstitching.

3. Line up Back pieces of shell and artificial fur wrong sides together, baste together at all raw edges.

4. Trim bottom edge of Back with bias tape of lining fabric. Apply one edge of bias onto garment, matching raw edges, and stitch at 1/4 width of bias. Turn the bias around the edge (width of bias finished must be around 1 cm, or 1/4 width of bias). Turn under loose raw edge of bias at the wrong side of garment (1/4 width of bias); baste. Stitch in the ditch of previous seam to finish the edge.

5. Trim front edge of each Front of artificial fur with bias tape in a similar manner.

6. Turn under front allowance of shell Front; press. Apply zipper tape at the wrong side of front edge, matching top end of zipper with a corner of Fronts, and stitch zipper to Front at 1.5 cm (5/8") from the front edge fold.

7. Line up Fronts of shell and fur face-to-face and stitch together at bottom edges. Clip allowances in corner; turn out to the face side. Topstitch bottom of Fronts 1 cm (3/8") from the edge. Baste together Fronts of shell and fur at side edges, armholes and shoulder edges.

8. Hand-sew Front of fur to zipper tape with invisible stitches.

9. Sew side and shoulder seams. Finish seam allowances (at the wrong side of garment) with bias tape similar to pt.4.

10. Trim neckline and armholes with bias tape.
